About the Mitcham Road and Rooks Road Rail Separation Project
From the John Holland Website
John Holland has been selected by the Victorian Government to deliver the Mitcham Road Rooks Road Rail Separation Project in an alliance with VicRoads, Metro Trains Melbourne, KBR and Public Transport Victoria.
The contract (approx. $140M) will eliminate two notorious spots for poor safety and congestion at the existing rail level crossings in Mitcham, and thereby provide safer travel conditions and improved travel times.
Work involves:
- Two grade separations by lowering the railway beneath Mitcham Road and Rooks Road;
- Realignment and construction of two new tracks to the south of the tracks within the existing rail corridor; and
- Construction of a new premium station.
General Manager for Rail, Richard Stewart, said this win highlights John Holland’s key capability in completing heavy civil and building work in live rail environments.
“We have key strengths in rail construction, particularly in track, signalling, overhead traction and bridge works,” Mr Stewart said.
General Manager for Infrastructure South, David Moran, said the contract further develops the strong relationship with VicRoads.
“We have worked with VicRoads on several jobs, including other rail separation projects at Nunawading (Springvale Road) and Laburnum Stations (Middleborough Road),” Mr Moran said.
Work is scheduled to commence in May 2013, and be completed by June 2014.
