About the Airport Drive Extension Project
From the Melbourne Airport website
Construction has started on the $100 million Airport Drive extension, which will provide a second major entry to the airport, and enhancements to Steele Creek North.
Extending Airport Drive from Sharps Road to Mercer Drive will provide direct access to the airport from the M80 Western Ring Road. This is expected to relieve congestion on the Tullamarine Freeway and reduce the amount of airport traffic using Melrose Drive.
The Airport Drive extension will consist of a 3.3km four lane divided road (two lanes in each direction), with the provision to expand to six lanes at a later time. The works will include a shared pedestrian and bike path adjacent to Airport Drive.
A new road, Watson Drive, will be constructed to maintain local access to Melrose Drive, Essendon Football Club and the Business Park. Watson Drive was named in honour of Essendon Football Club legend Tim Watson.
For safety reasons, Link Road will be re-aligned to form an intersection with Airport Drive and Watson Drive. Melrose Drive will also be redesigned to limit the airport traffic accessing residential streets.
While the road projects are being developed, a storm water system for Steele Creek North will be implemented to manage the quality and quantity of water entering the system.
