The aim is to help you get yourself into the best position to land a start on the major sites and projects around Australia.
About the Cairns Global Tourism Hub Project
We are really early to the game for this one, construction isn’t expected to start until 2020, but if you live in North Queensland it’s one you’ll want to keep your eye on. We will update this article as the project progresses.
- Owner – Queensland Government – Special Projects Unit, Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games
- Located in the Cairns, Cityport precinct.
- Project scope approx – $1 billion
- Project is currently in the ‘Expressions of Interest process for the delivery of the project’ phase.
- Proposed projects includes:
- Entertainment, recreational and cultural facilities;
- Luxury hotels;
- Resorts, including casinos and gaming facilities;
- Arcades, pools, salons, gyms and other recreational facilities;
- Meeting and conference facilities;
- Tourist attractions – such as maritime museums and aquariums;
- Theatre and convention facilities;
- Boutique retail;
- Restaurants and bars.
- Expression of Interest close September 2018, shortlist announced end of 2018, preferred proponents announced 2019, and construction expected to start mid to end 2020.
Occupations Potentially Required for the Cairns Global Tourism Hub Project
A construction job like this will usually require:
- Electrical Trades
- Mechanical Trades
- Metal Trades
- Building Trades
- Air Conditioning / Refrigeration Techs
- Crane Operators
- Labourer / Trades Assistant
- Peggy’s /Cleaning Staff
- Health & Safety
Qualifications that may help you get a foot in at the Cairns Global Tourism Hub Project
- Relevant Trade Qualifications and QLD Licences
- Occupational Health and Safety – Construction Induction (White Card)
- Australian Drivers Licences
- High Risk Work Licence for any required plant, eg. EWP, Forklifts, Mobile Crane, Loaders.
- Safely Working at Heights – for EWP workers
- Ability to pass Medical including Drug and Alcohol screening.
- Dogging/Rigging/Scaffolding tickets
- CPR and First Aid Certificate

Cairns Global Tourism Hub Project Enterprise Bargaining Agreements
An Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) is a collective industrial agreement between either an employer and a trade union acting on behalf of employees or an employer and employees acting for themselves.
We are yet to find any EBA’s for this project. As we find any EBA’s they will be added to this article.
